<h4 style="text-align:center;">BBDMI : BODY BRAIN DIGITAL MUSIC INSTRUMENTS / INSTRUMENTS DE MUSIQUE NUMÉRIQUE CORPS ET CERVEAU</h4>
Le projet BBDMI porté par la MSH Paris Nord est lauréat de l’appel de l’ANR CE 38, révolution numérique, rapport au savoir et à la culture Projet de Recherche Collaborative – Entreprise (PRCE).
Principaux enjeux
- Faire de la musique à partir des signaux électriques du muscle et du cerveau en s’appuyant des technologies EMG et EEG.
- Produire des prototypes instrumentaux de manière ouverte (open software et open hardware) et les documenter dans le cadre des sciences ouvertes (FAIR).
- Développer une méthodologie centrée utilisateur incluant aussi bien les musiciens expérimentaux que les praticiens de la pédagogie musicale, les publics empêchés par le moyen de la pratique et de la médiation artistique.
L’utilisation des signaux physiologiques du cerveau et du corps humains dans l’interaction homme-machine est devenue majeure, constituant le domaine de recherche de l’informatique physiologique. Les musiciens ont été à l’avant-garde du développement d’instruments de musique numériques adoptant des interfaces physiologiques, mais leurs efforts sont restés au niveau de l’expérimentation,  souvent isolés des communautés scientifiques concernées. Du côté industriel, les technologies EMG ou EEG appliquées à la musique et aux arts numériques sont en général développées de façon propriétaire, sans donner accès aux savoirs ni aux technologies mis en œuvre. Dans une perspective de sciences ouvertes étendue à l’industrie, BBDMI vise le développement ouvert d’un instrument de musique physiologique robuste et utilisable par des musiciens et des artistes sans connaissances spécialisées dans les domaines des neurosciences et de l’analyse du signal.
Le projet sera géré selon une approche de méthodes mixtes, en s’appuyant sur des stratégies émergentes de recherche-création dans le domaine de la musique et des arts numériques.
Sur le plan musical et artistique, le projet va pouvoir prendre racine et proliférer sur le territoire de la MSH Paris Nord. Par le biais d’ateliers et d’évènements publics. Le projet s’appuiera sur des cas tests et des compétences, et stimulera dans l’interdisciplinarité la diffusion et la pollinisation croisée entre l’art et la science, les professionnels et le public. 
BBDMI sera une nouvelle interface pour la création musicale qui pourra profiter à plusieurs communautés d’utilisateurs distinctes : les musiciens expérimentaux, les instrumentistes, et les praticiens de la médiation culturelle travaillant dans le monde de l’autisme et des publics empêchés. Le conservatoire municipal de la ville de St-Denis ainsi que le festival Sonic Protest figurent parmi les partenaires potentiels du projet.

Main objectives
- Making music from electrical signals of the muscle and the brain using EMG and EEG technologies.
- Producing instrumental prototypes in an open way (open software and open hardware) and to document them in the framework of open science (FAIR).
- Developing a user-centered methodology including experimental musicians as well as practitioners of music pedagogy, the public at large by means of artistic practice and mediation and based on an iterative feedback between  users  and conceptors.
The use of physiological signals from the human brain and body in human-computer interaction has matured into the research field of physiological computing. Musicians have been at the forefront of the development of digital musical instruments adopting physiological interfaces, but their efforts have remained at the experimental level, often isolated from the relevant scientific communities.
On the industrial side, EMG or EEG technologies applied to music and digital arts are generally developed in a proprietary manner, without giving access to the knowledge or technologies used. From an industry-wide open science perspective, BBDMI aims for the open development of a physiological musical instrument that is robust and usable by musicians and artists without specialist knowledge in the fields of neuroscience and signal analysis.
The project will be managed using a mixed methods approach, based on emerging research-creation strategies in the field of music and digital arts.
On the musical and artistic level, the project will be able to take root and proliferate on the territory of the MSH Paris Nord, through workshops and public events. The project will be based on test cases and expertise, and will stimulate interdisciplinary dissemination and cross-pollination between art and science, professionals and the public.
BBDMI will be a new interface for music creation that can benefit several distinct user communities: experimental musicians, instrumentalists, and cultural mediation practitioners working in the world of autism and disabled audiences. The municipal conservatory of the city of St-Denis and the Sonic Protest festival are among the potential partners of the project.

L'équipe est composée d'un groupe interdisciplinaire de neuroscientifiques, d'ingénieurs, d'enseignants, de développeurs et d'artistes-chercheurs en en informatique et création musicale. Le projet est coordonné par Anne Sèdes à la Maison des Sciences de l'Homme Paris Nord en partenariat avec l'Université Paris 8 et le laboratoire CICM/Musidanse, l'Institut du Cerveau et la société 60 circuits.

Le développement du projet est divisé en quatre lots : 
Lot 1 : Analyse des signaux biologiques EEG/EMG 
Le lot de travail 1 fournira l'expertise neuroscientifique et les algorithmes pour transformer les états mentaux et physiques en signaux de contrôle hybrides qui seront utilisés dans le WP2 ainsi que dans les dispositifs logiciels et matériels externes. Il évaluera également le matériel d'acquisition afin de fournir des recommandations pour le matériel de conception des instruments (WP3). 
 Lot 2 : Synthèse et traitement du son 
Le WP2 créera des approches modulaires pour la conception d'instruments de musique et pour l'organologie. Il utilisera des méthodes de recherche-création pour étudier les correspondances entre les données physiologiques du WP1 et la synthèse/traitement du son et la composition musicale, incluant le traitement spatial du son. Il aboutira au développement d'une boîte à outils musicale de modules à utiliser à différents niveaux des phases expérimentales et créatives de la production musicale. 
Lot 3 : Recherche en conception 
Le WP3 réalisera le développement du matériel, le design industriel et le prototypage du dispositif BBDMI. Une méthodologie de recherche par la conception (RTD) fait du processus de conception une partie intégrante du cycle de recherche du projet, interagissant avec les techniques développées dans les WP 1 et 2, et prenant en compte les connaissances des utilisateurs acquises dans le WP4. 
lot 4 : Recherche avec les utilisateurs 
Le WP4 travaillera avec les utilisateurs finaux du système BBDMI. Nous faisons appel à des méthodes de conception centrée 'utilisateur pour travailler avec un large éventail de musiciens, de pédagogues, de personnes non spécialistes ou empêchées et les inclure dans le cycle de recherche itératif. &nbsp;

Méthodologie

The development of the project is divided in four work packages
WP1: EEG/EMG bio-signal analysis
Work Package 1 will provide the neuroscientific expertise and algorithms to transform mental and physical states into hybrid control signals to be used in WP2 as well as external software and hardware devices. It will also benchmark acquisition hardware to provide recommendations for instrument design hardware (WP3).
WP2: Sound synthesis &amp; processing
Work Package 2 will create modular approaches for musical instrument design and organology. It will use methods of ‘research-creation’ to investigate mappings of physiological data from WP1 to sound synthesis/processing and musical composition including spatial processing. It will result in the development of a musical toolbox of modules to be used at different levels of experimental and creative phases of musical production.
WP3: Design research
Work Package 3 will carry out hardware development, industrial design, and prototyping of the BBDMI device. A Research-through-Design (RTD) methodology makes the design process an integral part of the project research cycle, interacting with techniques developed in WP 1 and 2, and taking into account user insights gained in WP4.
WP4: User research
Work Package 4 will work with end users of the BBDMI system. We call upon established User-Centered Design (UCD) methods to work with a diverse range of musicians to include them in the iterative research cycle.&nbsp;
